Seven Lawn Care Tips For a Lush, Green Lawn

Lush, green lawns are the pride and joy of many a homeowner. Beautiful, well cared for lawns also serve as a showcase for family recreation, picnics, cook outs, parties and summer fun. To achieve a perfectly healthy and green lawn this summer, follow these seven tips for lawn care success.

1) Water deeply and infrequently.
Watering deeply and thoroughly encourages grass to grow deep roots. This practice is especially helpful during periods of drought. Warm-season grasses need about one inch of water thoroughly takes twelve inches of soil. Giving your lawn one inch of water every three days is better than lawn watering for a few minutes each day.

2) Test your irrigation system.
To ensure that you are watering the lawn with the proper amount, testing of irrigation systems. Collect five straight-sided pans, such as cake pans or casserole dishes and place them around the lawn. Turn on the irrigation system and note the time it takes for one inch of water to accumulate in the pan. Check to see that each bowl gets about the same amount of water. You may need to adjust the amount or distance of sprinkler heads.

3) Never remove more than 1 / 3 of the grass blade when mowing.
Removing more than 1 / 3 of the grass blade at a time causes the grass plant stress. Removing too much blade can result in a burned appearance to the lawn because the grass plants will struggle to produce enough food for themselves by reducing the surface.

4) Keep mower blades sharp.
Using a sharp knife helps the appearance of the lawn mower. The blades provide clean cuts. They also allow the grass blade to recover from mowing faster.

5) The application of fertilizer at the correct rate and time.
Fertilizer helps the lawn stay healthy and green. It is important to apply fertilizer at the right time for best results. Granular fertilizers should be watered in, so it is best to plant if light rain is forecasted, or if you have irrigation. Never apply fertilizers before heavy storms, it will escape, and not sink into the ground. This will cause two things-pollution of waterways, and great loss of money for you, because you'll have to buy again and again.

Before applying any fertilizer and soil amendments, have a soil test run to determine the needs of your grass. Also look up the appropriate fertilizer amounts and types of programs for grass growing.

6) Check for insects and fungal pests often.
When you're in your lawn, enjoying this, take a few moments each week to walk around and look at it. If you see large brown circles, or dry areas, you probably have a problem. Fungal diseases are caused by large circles, called brownouts, and you can follow trails of insects along lines of dead grass left as they travel towards the ground. If you can not identify your lawn problems, consult your lawn care professional or Cooperative Extension office for assistance.

7) maintain the grass at the highest acceptable height for the type of grass in your lawn.
more grass blade, the deeper roots of the plants. Deeper grass roots support to survive drought and resist pests and diseases. Keeping your grass at a higher level does not mean you have to mow less often, it just means that you will give your lawn a better chance to be healthy and strong.

Basic lawn care grounds are easily overcome. Follow the seven tips for a successful lawn care and your lawn will stay nice and green all summer!
